About Cron Expression Parser & Explainer

Paste a 5-field cron expression to see every field explained and the next run times.

How to read a cron expression

Standard cron has five fields in order: minute (0-59), hour (0-23), day of month (1-31), month (1-12), and day of week (0-7, where both 0 and 7 mean Sunday). An asterisk means every value, a slash sets steps such as every 15 minutes, commas list values, and hyphens define ranges. So 0 9 * * 1 means 9 AM every Monday.

Special strings and Quartz differences

Many schedulers accept shortcuts like @daily, @hourly, @weekly, and @reboot as friendlier aliases. Note that Quartz (Java) and some cloud schedulers use six or seven fields with seconds first, so a 5-field expression pasted into Quartz needs a leading seconds value added.

📐 Methodology & Reference Accuracy: Calculations, formulas, and conversions execute locally in your web browser. Output models are benchmarked against official reference standards and updated for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions about Cron Expression Parser & Explainer

What does 0 0 * * * mean?

Midnight every day: minute 0, hour 0, with day, month, and weekday unrestricted.

How do I run something every 15 minutes?

Use a step value in the minute field. The exact form depends on your scheduler, commonly written as a slash-15 step, which this parser explains field by field.

Why did my cron job not run?

The usual causes are a wrong field order, a timezone mismatch between the schedule and the server, the cron daemon not running, or an environment difference such as a missing PATH for scripts.

Is day-of-month OR day-of-week?

In standard Vixie cron, when both fields are restricted (not asterisks), the job runs when either matches. To require a specific date regardless of weekday, keep the weekday field as an asterisk.
